I got a beautiful mk1 mazda mx5 1.6. I would like to beef up the sound abit and attach a performance air filter. I was looking at buying a pipercross or K'N induction kit around avout £80. Now I dont want to damage my car in anyway. People say that these mess up the engine and aint no good for your car. If thats the case then I will leave it standard. I dont want to make the car faster or anything like that, just want to add abit of tone. Can anybody tell me if they have one on thier mx5. Any advise would be great!
Many Thanks
Chris

I have had a K&N panel filter (fits in the stock air box) in one 90 Miata now for 12 years (100000 miles) and no problems.
I have a cone aftermarket on my other Miata now for 6 years (30000 miles) and no problems.
I have not added any after market cool air intakes to either.
Both filters let the noise from a fully opened intake come out (a high pitched whistle) and neither has changed the exhaust sound. This is more noticeable on the cone then the panel filter.
If installed right (pre oiled and such per makers instructions) they will not harm the engine. There is a little more horse power on the cone equipped one the the panel filter.
Now when messing with the tube that runs from the MAF to the throttle body or removing the tube from the inlet of the air box, it is possible to harm the over all performance as this will produce a flat spots in the HP/Torque curve. There are two resonance chambers built in for a reason in them.
