Mazda 323 vs Chevy Sprint?

Hey guys,
I need a cheap little hatchback with great gas mileage.
I have two cars lined up for the same price ($1000)
The first is a 1994 Mazda 323 with 183xxx,
Super nice body, two door, engine runs soundly, and looks amazing.
Second is a 1990 Chevrolet Sprint with 160xxx,
Body is kinda rusting, four door, but the owner has put a lot of repairs into it. (Timing belt, alternator, front wheel bearings.)

Which one do you think would be a safer bet?
 
Pick the Mazda! There is a reason the Sprint needed a lot of repairs and more are to follow. Also if the body is rusty, there is very little reason to sink more money into it.
