I currently drive a 2004 Mazda 3. Recently I took it in for an oil change at the Mazda Dealership and they performed their "Full Circle Inspection." Everything came back great with the exception of the "serpent belt making a bit more noise than usual." I laughed when they said this because I haven't found anything unusual nor has any other mechanic that has worked on my car in the past few months. And the funny part is THEY were the ones that changed the serpent belt along with the water pump pulley just a few months ago. No problems then. So I took it back yesterday to have the belt checked. They called me out into the garage and asked me if anything sounded unusual I said "no." They unplugged something slightly near the engine and it did quiet down- they said that's how it's supposed to sound...barely a noticeable difference. They asked me if I have noticed a power loss or any hesitation. I said "no." I really haven't. I'm happy with how the car performs. Then they said well it could be the intake manifold, something about a valve and quoted me $1000. If it is, am I doing the car harm by driving it? It really seems fine.
