mazda 3 hatchback or BMW X5?

My parents want to buy a used car which is better Mazda 3 hatchback 2007 or BMW x5 2005.

I don't get how you can compare a BMW X5 SUV to a small Mazda hatchback.

both are good but I've heard BMWs have a lot of problems when it comes to maintenance....then again they are also very safe too
so I guess that's the tradeoff lol
