structures are subjected to 2 types of movement in an earthquake, P-wave and S-wave. P-wave is the sharp up and down movement, called the primary wave. S-wave is the longer lasting side to side movement, called secondary waves. then there are the after shocks.if the base rock is affected no way out other than buildings collapsing.
