Math question. A car door lock has a five-button keypad. Each button has two numerals?

How many different five-button patterns are possible? You can use a button more than once.

I know that the answer is 3125 and probably came from 5^5. But I do not really understand why?

A friend of mine answered by saying

Depends on how many digits is the code.
2 digit code=25 different combinations
3 = 125 different combinations
4 = 625 different combinations
5 =3125 different combinations

How did he get 25 for a two digit code? If it is 5^2 = 25, then how and why? This is what I really need to understand.
Why people are saying "any of teh five digit numbers"? I thoght there are 10 digit numbers we can choose from (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).
