Material and application help for making a sculpture?!?!?

I'm looking to create an art piece where figures appear to be emerging from a flat surface (ie: a wall, canvas, wood panel...haven't decided yet). The figures would be life size so relatively large. I'm just not sure how to go about making the figures themselves and then attaching them to the surface.
I was at first thinking of using paper mache but I feel that my prof would deem it too elementry. Then I thought of plaster but I've never used plaster before. I also thought of clay and wax but I don't know if both would be too heavy. I also thought of using paper mache as a base and then covering it with clay...but then I don't know how that would stay together (clay being a soft material and when it dries it tends to chip).

Any help on this is GREATLY appreciated, since its my final year and we have to present our work in a "show" (which I've never done professionally before). I've done one clay sculpture in my first year that was relatively small but resembles a lot of what I plan to do for this project. The prof liked it so much she said I should get into making sculptures.
