Although cursed with a dire US title (Attack of the Mushroom People) and a totally gratuitous ukelele-playing scene, this is still a great little film.
Never on tv but available if you know where to look.
Based on William Hope Hodgson's scary short story "A Voice in the Night" this Toho effort, directed by Inoshiro Honda, tells of a group of weekend sailors shipwrecked on an uncharted, apparently uninhabited island.
With little food, tempers fraying and signs that someone else is on the island, they find a derelict ship covered in mould. No bodies and no trace of the crew. Where are they, why did they break all the mirrors on board and what are they eating?:eek:
This is a genuinely creepy tale (and not the load of shiitake the US title might suggest) with some striking images, great music and for a Japanese monster movie, some restrained performances.

All makers of gore porn should be forced to watch it, at gunpoint if necessary.

Proof that not all Toho movies are lame, man-in-a-suit monster rallies.
