Simply put, traditions, and "higher forms of culture" use information to help the people that it belongs to. For example: folk tales warn against certain courses of action for individuals because of the effect that their actions have on the whole. The individuals adhere to these principles because they ensure survival and are trustworthy. Mass media has no principles other than profit. The values that emerge from a profit-driven information system will reflect the interests of those who control that system, rather than that of its participants. The result is a disillusionment and disbelief in the power of mass culture.

mass demand, the results? mass appeal . . .
