Martyrs

Last night I went to a 12 hour 'day of the dead' horror movie thing, part of the 22nd LeeRAB InternationalFilm Festival, and Martyrs was one of the films featured.

Has anyone else seen this?

It was the last film of the night, so we were all slightly uncomfortable (5 movies and 4 short movies sat in a seat is not good for your arse bones & muscles!!), so I was almost nodding off for the first part of the film, but at the end of it I was left a little numb as to what I had watched. I'd not heard anything about this film other that it was almost banned in France.

Some of the scenes went on far too long and the film seemed spilt into seperate sections which seemed odd. The ending was a bit too rushed too, which frustarted me a little, but I can see why it was rused (if that makes sense? I'm trying not to give any details away).

I noticed quite a few people walking out about 3/4 of the way through - I dunno if that was down to the length of time we had all been there, or the people were 'shocked/disgusted' at the film.

My partner said it was crap, but I thought it was thought provoking......my main thought was 'was all that torture needed to tell the story of the girls?', LOL.

It certainly wasn't the highlight of the festival (I'm seeing an old 80's documentary next week about New York graffiti, but that's a more personal passion of mine that I expect to enjoy more than anything :D), but everyone else in the theatre were cheering and clapping furiously at the end of the screening.

I guess the question I'm asking is...if any of you have seen Martyrs, did it live up to the hype? Did you see it as just another slasher/torture porn flick, or did you see more the 'artistic' merit in it?

AGH, wish people would stop using that dumb term torture porn. Also, Slasher is a sub genre of horror and different to what people label using this new 'term' Torture porn...

Anyway, it's a French film I have been wanting to see for months and months and I've mostly heard good things about it, very disturbing apparently, but excellent.

It's not out here outside of a film festival, so will have to wait and see when it comes out, unless it gets a French dvd release beforehand, I hope. :)
