I finally got to see French horror flick Martyrs, and what a movie.
Seriously, one of the greatest horror movies I have ever seen. This is one disturbing,unique,thought-provoking and even surreal piece of work. Not for everybody's taste but if you liked Inside, then you should like this.On the other hand,if you found Inside cheesey and nothing but an excuse for gore - then you'll like this much more.

This is an eye-opener,in a world filled with enjoyable but generic, soulless remakes. What could have been an ambitious uneven mess is infact superbly orchestrated from beginning to end.Spotlessly acted with character(s) you actually care about.

AHH!, I for some reason thought it was out at the end of the month. Thanks for telling me, now to order. Does the French edition have subtitles?

Unfortunately not.
However, the Region 1 DVD due at the end of the month does.

I very much doubt there will be even a national limited release of either.Martyrs is definitely showing at the ICA in London at the end of the month, not sure about anywhere else.

Remake on the way. Apparently the director of the original has said Fox have bought the rights to it.

Funny, the director of Martyrs is making the remake of Hellraiser, sorry a 'reboot'.

I was a little disappointed when I read it was heading for the remake treatment. It will be near impossible to recreate Martyrs to the same level of quality,so people will end up viewing an inferior movie first. It will make the original into a cult classic (like Quarantine did to Rec) but it will never have the same effect. That is if you see the remake first, which most people will.

I actually look forward to the Hellraiser remake/reboot (personally I would prefer a full on remake of the book). It could be great if those Weinstein boys leave well alone. That's a big IF.

I watched it today and really liked it. The director should bring something to the Hellraiser remake going by
the end of Martyrs
, some nice effects there that reminded me of the film.

Possible spoilers - dont read this post if you dont want to know...

I watched it and thought it was utter gash. Starts off well until the turning point Anna is found in the house by you know who.

what i dont get is...

How does the 7 stone woman getting beaten for a good half hour by a 20 stone man make her a martyr? My understanding of a martyr is someone who dies for a cause or religion. there was no mention of Anna being religious, you cant force someone into being a martyr. Anna was caught and tortured and the only cause she died for was someone elses.

And the ending - wtf -
if Madamoiselle kills herself because she thinks "get in there is an afterlife and i am going there now" what makes her assume she is going to go to the same place that Anna saw? Surley (if you believe in that sort of thing) madamoiselle would be sending herself to hell because of the whole torture thing? And if you do believe in hell, why on earth would you want to send yourself there of all places?

Watched this film today, and don't think I've ever felt so disturbed by anything in my life. I suppose it is a good film, but I would not recommend anyone watch it *shudder*

And it had that effect on you when you watched it during the day? What made you watch it on a Wednesday morning/ early afternoon?

I loved ( if that is the right word) this film.:D

It's cos I'm off work ill, mind you, it's not really the sort of film that I think you need to watch in the dark, as I wouldn't call it scary, or jumpy, just really traumatic. It's totally ruined my whole day now!

Bless:)

Have you seen any other French Horrors?

Inside
Switchblade Romance

The French seem to love getting pretty women in horror films , and fu**ing them up as much as possible:eek:
