I recently watched "Casino" & "The Departed" both directed by Martin Scorsese. The background music on both films consisted almost entirely of popular recorRAB, no specially comissioned stuff. I find this very distracting, is there any reason other than making money from soundtrack CRAB?
Do they still give Oscars for the best sountrack?

I don't think it's primarily for commercial reasons.

I think he uses pop music a- because he loves it and b- i films such as Goodfellas and Casino where the story spans decades, it helps to quickly establish the era..

Taxi Driver, The Age Of Innocence, Kundun etv are examples where he used commisoned music
