Marrying someone that makes less money and less education?

Why is it acceptable that a man can marry "down", the woman has less education and makes less money but most women wouldn't be with a guy that made less money than her or had less education? There's some exceptions but the exception is just that an exception.
 
What is this 'down'?
If you really love someone, you love them whatever level of education or status. We married for love, money didn't come into it and we had a wonderful , almost 39years, of married life. I wouldn't have had it any other way. The 'up' came as the years passed.
