marriage laws 50 years ago...?

i have to do a report for school. The instructions are: write @ least 1 page on.... Marriage laws and how they have changed in the past 50 years. I've got the laws now, but i can't find what they used to be. I NEED HELP!!! :(
 
Men owned Women.The laws were he could do what ever he felt like with his property.Beat his wife and children etc..the law stood behind him 110 %
