Mark Kermode?

Hi,

Anyone a fan of his?

Just wondering what people think, keep coming across his name going through movie stuff, in the same way you keep coming across Jeremy Clarkson when reading about cars.

Kind regarRAB,

I like Kermode, for the most part anyway. I always held his opinion in quite high regard but I find he irritates me more thesedays, he's still be one of the best critics around but his five live stuff is basically just him putting on daft accents and going off on rants, it's cringworthy bollocks.

Mark Kermode the film critic I still like, Mark Kermode the celeb, not so much.

I like Ross also, basically just because he's a bit of a geeky fanboy about films

I feel similar to you. For years I've admired Kermode and his way of reviewing films, and still look forward to his shows on the radio. However, lately his Five Live show has really been concentrating on what I find less worthy of Kermode at the expense of film reviews. So much time now is spent with forced ranting and raving (fair enough in moderation, but too much of a "good thing"...), his love-in with Simon Mayo and the subsequent distractions from reviews, and the inability to know when a joke has long gone past its sell-by date (the now really boring bringing up letters from the listener who seem to all need to put their educational "achievements" at the fore of their letters; for God's sake, just quit it, it was mildly funny at the beginning, but it's now just pointlessly wasting good time...).

Another thing that neeRAB to be said is that Radio Five can't seem to devote a proper hour to this show, with constant interruptions about some minor sport, pointless press conference, etc, which seems to break up the show. You know, there are hourly and half-hourly news breaks for such stuff, as well as another radio feed on digital.

He can be perhaps a bit of an irritating smugster at times...but as a pundit he ticks a lot of boxes.

He seems well informed and knowledgeable with plenty to say, a POV that appears well thought through even if you don't agree with it and a style of delivery that's articulate, entertaining (as a rule) and often just a touch provocative.

Him and Mayo are just wonderfully funny and entertaining on their podcasts..love them, even if I don't always fully see eye to eye with them all the time.

This

I don't always agree with his reviews , but he always seems to have a lot of fun reviewing movies. I don't think anybody with a treble figure IQ would be sad to see him replace Ross on Film 2009.

I find he concentrates on the bad aspects of films, his reviews are too negative. I know more about the films he doesn't like, or think are good, than those he thinks have merit.

He also has a very passionate dislike for Keira Knightley, which I can understand (though I don't necessarily agree with; I think she has good moments) but it comes up almost every time I hear him !

He liked The Duchess though, and said he wouldn't call her Ikea any more in that review. I think Guy Ritchie is the only one he truely hates, to the extent I wonder if they've had a run in at some point.

He's the only film critic whose opinion I note, very knowledgeable. Also like the programmes he's made in the past about various films - that's the way all DVD featurettes should be.

I'd personally like to see him replace Ross on Film 2009. Ross fawns over the big movie names on his chat show, and I'm not sure it's ideal that he present a review show at the same time.

I'm a big fan, download the podcast most weeks, I certainly don't agree with him everytime, but his reviews are as good a benchmark as any, and I particularly love his treatment of big-budget Transformers/Pirates of the Caribean type films.

Always look forward to his podcasts, especially when a big rant is on the carRAB!
Wish they'd spend more time on the films rather than saying hello to Jason Isaacs/listing qualifications though.
