Mark Dayton

U.S. Senator Mark Dayton (D-Minnesota) has closed his office in Washington, D.C. due to an intelligence report which indicated a terrorism event could occur sometime before the November elections.

Do you support his move?

It's the principal of the deal. That's the way I see it.

I voted NO.

That kind of behavior is typical of a gutless leader - and a senator must be a leader IMO. Besides, running scared is what the terrorists want – they passionately desire it. Just because Dayton said it (it was reported by Bill Frist???) doesn’t mean it’s a real threat. But causing panic, and which could cause businesses to close and/or trips canceled, he should at least go into detail about it. What’s the big cheese? So far the Homeland Security Department says the agency has no intelligence indicating a threat next month… Where did he get this info? Why didn’t any other lawmaker stand with him?

He’s making a statement, IMO. He was right about the war in Iraq, but wrong here. He was knocked around over his WII stance, scoffed at, but two wrongs don’t make a right.

It shows poor taste and in 2 years may cost him his job.

I think his actions are unwarranted. I wonder how politically calculated this was. It's as if he doesn't trust the current administration to be able to keep him safe.

That's my guess. What other reason would there be? Like I said, he's making a statement, getting publicity. We'lll soon see the reasoning...maybe tonight on the news channels. From them (after we've brushed away some of the bias-ness) maybe we can find some info - maybe.

I actually voted for this guy, but I do not support this. Either he is being gamey or he was not thinking. I hope he changes his mind. Not many - democrat, republican or us in-betweeners seem to support this. Even if there is validity to the threat - it's the wrong message to send to his constituency and to terrorists.

I was the first to vote yes. I really don't have any idea about this except what is presented here, but let's put it this way. 2 years ago, there was the sniper incident here in Maryland. If you didn't know about it or forgot, basically people just started being shot and by the time they found out they had been shot, got help, and tried to find the shooter they were gone. They shot from the car and drove off. Now even with just a threat this general, all of our athletic events were canceled, we weren't allowed outside unsupervised at school, and many people didn't go to work for fear of being shot. Regardless of the fact that you had a better chance of dying in a car crash than being shot by the sniper, but they were afraid and the government acted on this general threat. Now imagine that we recieve intelligence that he's on the way to your house and we know he will try to shoot you. Would you not leave? This is about more than an image, this is a life. And if you know it will be attacked, wouldn't you get a little scared and not be there? As I said I hadn't heard about this until today, but so far I don't see why he shouldn't have left? (of course he could have just decided to move temporarily until the threat is gone instead of permanently)

This is one of the most bizarre analogies ever. There has been no evidence supporting a threat to Senate offices. Not 1 of the other 99 Senators left. Even the office across the hall from him, the office of another Senator, is not doing anything. Nobody in Washington, except Mark Dayton, is doing anything. And to compare this to a sniper shooting is absurd. There is no evidence of anyone claiming to attack Senate offices, and so far none have occured. I suggest reading up on this before you throw out those comparisons.

As I said I didn't know anything about this except as quoted from the first post

"U.S. Senator Mark Dayton (D-Minnesota) has closed his office in Washington, D.C. due to an intelligence report which indicated a terrorism event could occur sometime before the November elections."

It depenRAB how the report was stated but if there was a confirmation that they were going to attack there I wouldn't have blamed him. I stated in my post that this was all I was drawing my conclusion from and stating a possibility.

So in that case, everything is DC should close? There were absolutely no threats that targeted specific places. And wouldn't you think DC is probably one of the safest places to be? Either way, apparently the information was not too serious or else more Senators would have left their offices. This is simply a political stunt by Mark Dayton. He should have his office in DC taken away from him and given to someone else.

I guess I agree with you mostly, but DC isn't the safest place to be. The safest place to be would be in the wooRAB somewhere in the middle of nowhere. During 9/11, we were on a school trip to West Virginia and we knew that even if there were to be a follow-up attack, we were the safest in the middle of nowhere where there would be no point of a terrorist trying to attack.

I feel we should expect more from our leaders. He was elected to the high office on a full-time basis; it's a 24-7 job, IMO. His conduct is similar and reminiscent of the reaction of the Spanish people after the terrorist attack there. They, and Senator Dayton, have given the impression of being cowed. :xchicken:

It's good no one else followed his extremely poor example.
