Marine Engineering in the military?

I want to be a Marine Engineer or Naval Architect. Which branch would provide the best work for me. I was thinking Navy but Marines and Army get stuck in situations where they need Engineers of all sorts.. But I thought mostly they would want Civil Engineers. Which Branch would be best for me. And do I have to go through Basics for this job?
