So I've wanted to do marching band so much, and I was not able to sign up for my school's first year of marching band because I moved too late. Fortunately, I'm going during my second year and I will be a marcher starting this summer. I play the flute and piano. My friend almost convinced me to join the pit, but I'm DEFINITELY in the woodwinds section for marching band.
I like to get lots of opinions with the things that I make commitments to, and with something like marching band, I looked up lots of things on how hard it is, how much time it takes, strategies to prevent dehydration, and all these other sorts of marching band topics (from what I hear, there is a whole debate over whether or not water or gatorade is better, lol). One big one that I notice is a HUGE disagreement over whether or not marching band is a sport, and whether or not it is hard enough to be considered a sport.
Okay, so I definitely think that marching band IS A SPORT, or at least it should be considered one. From all the things that I've heard from the band clinics/camps, tons of people literally pass out and vomit from the hot weather, huge time lengths, and other dangerous things. It's continuously challenging because you have to strain your muscles to march, and it's also so dangerous because of the possibility of some 50 Ib.-tuba-carrying person crashing into you and giving you a concussion. From what I hear, the hours are CRAZY and incredibly difficult.
Also give me opinions on your marching band experience or even pointers? I want to know every side of the story for marching band so that I have a good grasp of what to expect when it starts.
So, is marching band a sport?
Of course, please be respectful, and thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question!
