Is it worth a rider of moderate ability, having a set of fancy light wheels or would I only really notice the difference if I was superfast.

Any reduction in weight from wheels, sprocket, any rotateing mass will help with acceleration/deceleration, cornering. If you ride mostly on the street buy the forged aluminum because they are strong and durable. Cast is heavier. Magnesium and carbon are great, but too fragile for the street. Too many pot holes.
