Mapof.it is like a TinyURL for Google Maps locations, but with human-readable links, options for multiple mappings sites, and an easy-to-grok coding system.
The most basic use of the service is to enter an address, separated into words with + symbols, after the mapof.it address. So enter this into your browser, for example:

http://mapof.it/1600+pennsylvania+ave+washington+d.c.
Your result is a Google Map pointing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., though you can also use colons to separate the city/country item (so mapof.it/trafalgar+square:gb for a famous Great Britain address).
Put a slash between two addresses:

http://mapof.it/haight+st+and+ashbury+st:san+francisco+CA/broadway+and+fifth+ave:new+york+ny
And you end up here:

There are codes you can enter to change your default from Google to Yahoo Maps, OpenStreetMap, and others, saving your preference in a browser cookie. For passing map links over text message or email without garbled code, or adding some transparency to site map links, it's a really handy site. Hit the link before for more hints on working the URL.
