Managing Trigger points?

So at home if I'm struggling with my muscles, does it help to apply pressure only or heat or both to trigger points? I'm not used to obviously having so many, but after a 3rd whiplash, I think I have one right at the SCM insertion point behind my right ear. I had a few along my ribs before which I used a tennis ball on against a wall. But if anyone else has ideas for home care, please help.
