A man was critically injured this afternoon when he entered the Bronx Zoo tiger exhibit and was mauled, New York authorities say.
Update at 5:22 p.m. ET: Witnesses told police the 25-year-old man climbed a fence and jumped into the Tiger Mountain exhibit, the New York Daily News says. But the New York Post, echoing the earlier New York Times report, cites authorities as saying the man -- described as emotionally disturbed -- jumped from the zoo's monorail.
One tiger "ripped his left foot off," the Post writes, citing sources.
Three Amur tiger cubs debuted last month.
Original post: A man was critically injured this afternoon after he jumped or fell into the Bronx Zoo tiger den and was attacked, according to news reports.
The man, in his 20s or 30s, fell or jumped from the zoo's monorail and was attacked by a tiger about 3:25 p.m. ET, a fire department spokesman told The New York Times. Police told news stations the man jumped into the exhibit.
He suffered deep cuts to his back and a severe leg injury. The local Fox News, NBC and ABC affiliates are reporting that a foot has been amputated because of the mauling.
Zookeepers corralled the tiger in a cage.
