A man in a black Cadillac who got in a shootout with Texas deputies may have ties to the murder of the Colorado prisons chief killed earlier this week, according to media reports.
The man’s car had Colorado license plates and was heading south, the Denver Post reported. Colorado officials had issued an appeal to the public to be on the lookout for a boxy, dark Cadillac or Lincoln.
Lt. Jeff Kramer, a spokesman for the El Paso County (Colorado) Sheriff’s office, told the Post that the suspect fired shots at deputies during a pursuit in Wise County, Texas, northwest of Fort Worth.
“Nothing has been confirmed yet,” he told the Post.
Tom Clements,  58, the director of the state’s Department of Corrections, was shot Tuesday evening when he answered the door to his home.
The Wise County Messenger reported that the identity of the man was not yet known. The newspaper reported that during a traffic stop, the suspect opened fire on a deputy, hitting him in the chest twice and once in the head. The suspect then raced off in heavy traffic and exchanged gunfire with officers. The chase ended when the Cadillac crashed.
The deputy, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was taken by helicopter to a Fort Worth Hospital, the Messenger reported.
In an update on the case, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement saying the department was cooperating with the FBI and local authorities in Texas to determine if the chase incident was connected to the investigation into Clements’ death.
Texas authorities scheduled a news conference on the incident on Thursday afternoon.
