Making a database in Google Docs: Can I export information into it?

I have a Google Doc's spreadsheet with over 1000 contacts for my business. My boss wants a database for it in Google Doc's specifically for easy access to said contacts. He said I was on the right track by making a form, but the problem with this is that it basically uploads all the info onto the spreadsheet anyways. Now, there's also a summary under the "see responses" option, but none of the previously entered data shows up on this. I need suggestions on a good (and free) way to make a database out of this information, preferably using Google. Any suggestions?
