I have a friend who is a female, 59 years old, and who had a major heart attack and was found unconscious for an undetermined amount of time. I visited her in ICU today and was shocked by all of the machines and tubes attached to her body. She is on a breathing machine that compresses her diaphram to help her breath. She also has a feeding tube attached to her abdomen. I would like to know, if possible, what this indicates? Does this mean she is in a critical state? She was not awake during my visit, and I don't know if this means she was comatose. The nurse could not release any information regarding her general health or well being since I am not a family member. I would basically like to know in what conditions are these machines used and because of their uses whether or not she could be considered in a critical condition?
I have tried to follow up on this on the 'net but haven't had much success. Any help would ease my mind as to her prognosis.
Thank you.
