Magnetosphere and Future Solar Storms? (sort of 2012 related)?

Okay so I'm trying to pull myself up and out of the 2012 paranoia I've got going on. First off, I read somewhere (NASA's site) that there is a gap in the magneosphere - i don't really know what this is, at all. Why is this used as a 2012er reason for doom? I also don't really believe in the whole solar storm death destruction woe thing, but since I stumbled across the gap in the magnetosphere thing, I am curious as to how they effect eachother, and to how they could effect earth.
 
solar storm wont kill you.

They will probably cause a blackout, depending on the intensity of the storm, but that's about it. Maybe the blackout would cause some death out of accidents.
 
The world will not end in 2012. Anyone who says otherwise is trying to sell you something.

The best thing to do when hearing about a new "2012 end of world" idea is to ignore it. Don't rationalize it, don't try to understand it or make sense of it. - ignore it. People will use lots of rhetoric and B.S. to try and sell their 2012 ideas because they have no actual fact to back it up. Or, they speak of things that sound scientific but really mean nothing, as is the case here.
