Machu Picchu: Do you have to hike all the way?

I'm going to Machu Picchu in April, and I want to know if you have to hike to get there. I know there is a train, but does the train take you within a reasonable distance of the actual site? Or do you have to take a trail to get to the site?
 
No, I'm pretty sure they have the whole mountain paved so obese Americans don't have to get out of their Chevys.

Yes that was sarcasm. Yes, you do have to hike.
 
According to article below, there are two approaches. One is a 4 day hike and the other is a 2 day hike.
