Machine Heads on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I was told today that my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee had cracked heads (I'm assuming cylinder heads, though I don't know much about engines...) and that they would have to send off the heads to a machine shop to be fixed for a total cost of $3314. The car is probably worth just a little more than half that and I'm not going to pay that much.

Are there any mechanically-minded people out there who have some advice? I'm going to get a second opinion somewhere else. Can I drive my jeep with cracked heads or is it going to destroy it? Is there something else I can do? Why do they need to machine the heads and not just replace them?

Thanks!

Scotty
