Mac word paragraph spacing?

On my Mac Word 2008, for some reason the spacing between lines on paragraphs seems to be odd. On parts of the document when I hit enter and tab to start a new paragraph it gives about a one point space. When I hit enter other times it gives it about a 2.0 space. It looks like I hit enter twice! It looks stupid as it randomly switches between the two on the document, and I can't find a fix for this.
Any ideas?
