Mac laptop....flash drive.?

So I just started using a Mac laptop yesterday and I inserted my flash drive into it to test if I could save something on it and open it on my desktop computer. Well, the problem is is that I have no idea how to save it. Like I press save on Microsoft word and then I don't know where to find the flash drive. Maybe it's the fact that the flash drive doesn't work with the mac. I have no idea.
Could someone give me a starter? I'm veryy inexperienced with mac.

you need to reformat the drive to fat 32. on windows its save as, if there isnt something like that on the mac, go to your documents and then copy it into your flash drive.
