Mac Boot Camp: Can I use an external Hard Drive?

Basically, I've been told that you can run Windows XP (or higher) on mac through an application called Boot Camp, which allows you to partition a part of your hard drive and install Windows. This is ideal for me because I bought a Mac mainly for video editing purposes, but the gamer in me is being alienated from the plethora of pc games that are incompatible to Mac. However. I wanted to know if it is possible to maybe install Windows 7 on an external hard drive and essentially use it as if I had partitioned the hard drive on my Mac.
In other words: I want to be able to run Windows 7 on my Mac without giving up some of the hard drive space on my Mac. (Boot Camp without using the hard drive on my Mac)
I have been told that this is possible, but I want to make sure it is before I buy anything.

So I ask, is this possible? If yes, how can it be done?

Sorry for the hefty read, but I want to be thorough. Haha.
Thanks in advance.
