m515 upgrade to T3

I wonder if any one can help. Thinking of upgrading from my m515 to the T3 now I know the T3 uses the universal connector so am I right in thinking I can use my exsisting desktop chargers etc. Also and more importantly I have a NavMan 500 GPS, would this also work in theory. I know I may need to get some more mapping software but to be honest that not a prob as SmartPath City and Trip are very basic! If I can't use the NavMan is it possible to get (or Make!) a Palm universal connector to USB socket! so I could plug in a USB GPS mod. I have a Fortuna U2 coming to try with the Mac.

Any advice on the Upgrade would be of great help (and push me closer to doing it!) Also I am a Mac OS X user so any feed back from Mac users with regards the T3 would be great!!

Cheers

First, congratulations on your decision to upgrade.

Second, please be aware that if you go with a T3 you won't be able to get it from Palmone any longer because they have discontinued that product. There are still T3s out there to purchase from other vendors, there just won't be directy from Palmone.

Third, the beauty of the T3 is its universaity and ease in conversion from Palm m500 class of PDAs.

Fourth, if you go to a T3, many, many developers have adapted their applications T3 (Palm Os 5). If you encounter particuar probems, your best shot would be to go directly to the application developer. 99.9% of the time they have worked all of the bugs out to make sure their application works the way it is suppose to work. There will probably be an additional utility they can provide you to change the profile of the screen view from profile to landscape.

Best of luck with your conversion...

As I replied to your thread at rabroad, I'll not repeat GPS info here.

When upgrading get the latest versions of the applications you're going to install. This way you should have fewer SW issues.

Also I assume you know that you WILL NOT be able to use any OS 3/4 hacks (3rd party OS extensions). Some have OS 5 equivalents, but most do not. Also TealPoint makes an emulator that will allow some well behaved OS 3/4 hacks run under OS 5 @ http://www.tealpoint.com/softmstr.htm (Note: I've NOT used, so buyer beware)

The T3 is a great PDA, only issue is that the battery run time could be better.

Cacus:
I did the same thing nearly 2 years ago - an M505 to a T3. Big jump for me to OS5 at the time, and I worried certain apps would not work.

All my apps worked - even older (and some way older!) OS3/OS4 types like TomCatalog and Always On.

Hacks are relatively easy to handle:
TealMaster will handle, as genoahaus said, certain older OS4 hacks safely, and put a red "!" next to ones that won't work before you launch them. OS5 Hacks WILL NOT work in TealMaster - but they WILL WORK with YAHM.

http://yahm.palmoid.com/

So I simply have the OS5 hacks running under YAHM ("Yet another hack manager," freeware). Hacks "checked on" under YAHM should be checked "off" under TealMaster. Hacks on under TM should be "off" under YAHM.

I run TealLaunch under T/Master, "No Dot" and another one I can't remember right now under YAHM - no problems. YOu can have 2 hack managers running independently and I haven't had a crash.

As far as non-hack stuff, I would install them one (or two) at a time - not just "en masse" so that you can check for problems - but there shouldn't be any.

I personally moved all of the apps in my backup folder to a temp "hold" folder, hotsynced only the addresses/calendar stuff - and then installed apps slowly. Under the HotSync Manager "custom" tab in the T3 Desktop version, you'll see listings for the "old" and "new" conduits listed. The NEW NAMES for T3 PIMS are "contacts, memos, tasks and calendar."

After you've synced your contacts/dates/memos go into hotsync "custom" and uncheck the names for the OLD CONDUITS for the 515 (addresses, to-dos, memo pad and datebook) and leave CHECKED AND ON the NEW "PIMS" - contacts, memos, tasks and calendar." The T3 uses different names on the Palm desktop to synch information, and I don't like any conflicts between "old and new." The ones you'll have on, to reiterate, are:

contacts
tasks
calendar
memos

Set these to your preference (synch, handheld overwrites, desktop overwrites). Set the others to "do nothing." This should alleviate some problems people have. I think in the beginning you need them on so Palm Desktop can "gather the info" from the old 515 PIMS to transfer - I'm not sure.

Good luck with the upgrade - you'll LOVE THE T3 and shouldn't have much of an "app upgrade" problem as I said earlier. Very few "won't work," and you'll know soon enough if you have one of those rare ones. I was amamzed how many older apps DID WORK just fine!

Cheers.

I migrated from a 515 to a TT then to a T2 next the T3. Some of the OS patches used in the 515 need to be removed from the Backup folder or they can crash the T3.
It is always best when you have the time to load one app at a time to the new unit so that the app is clean and carries no trash with it.
I agree that the T3 battery is a bit short lived. Turn off the BlueTooth and IR. That will help extend the life.

Yes do that, and if you need/want you can get battery extenders or "upgrade" battery to 30% more capacity, with an upgrade that voids warranty.

I find that my T3 battery lasts a day of two of regular use, but as I sync daily it's not a real issue for me (charges while syncing and while I use computer for email, etc.).

Only times I need more is when I'm using T3 in car for GPS (use car chargers and special Belkin Y-sync cable - GPS is serial and the additional USB port allows charging T3).
And I use Boxwave battery adaptor for long plane trips (for MP3 enjoyment).

Battery extenders are "power to go" sled from PalmOne (discontinued?), or Boxwave Battery Adaptor (needs an additional sync cable).

Power to Go can still be found at some on-line retailers. And Boxwave stuff can be found at their web site.

Note: I've heard that the "Power to Go" sled interferes with flip cover attachment on back of T3.

And the DIY battery upgrade thread can be found at rabroad:

Hi All.

Many thanks for all your replys.

although sorry but don't know what you mean by this:

[/B]

Will probably move over to the T3 as I have been informed else were that it works with the NavMan GPS 500 although not sure about the SmartPath software. This said I have just won/ordered MapSonic UK v1.32 off eBay for ?16!! Plus if worse comes to the worse I'll have to stick with the M515 for GPS at the mo. Though I would like street to street and voice commands!

Any many thanks to all.

Cheers

O.K. folks ......

I have a Palm m515 and in July will be upgrading to "something" ??? Right now, I'm thinking a Tungsten T5. Can anyone talk me out of / into it? This is the price range I want to stay in (so the LifeDrive is out). I'd like ease of conversion (I use / sync my current handheld at home and work) so cables may / may not ??? be an issue?

Any advice for me before I make the plunge to OS 5?

Cheers,

Syno

My own experience with the T3 has been very positive. Soild, fast and easy to use.
Check out the retail sites that post buyer feedback/reviews. The ones I have seen give the T5 a 3 Star rating while the T3 gets a 4 or 5 Star rating.
Everyone is different!

I just upgraded from the m515 to T3 (thanks in part to many folk here). Any way I was a bit apprehensive wondering if bar the screen and memory I'd see much of a real world improvement.

IT'S BRILL.....

The improvement over the m515 feels massive, graffiti 2 takes a bit of getting use to but screen is a massive leap forward and one thing I found a pain on the m515 was accessing SD cards, large ones were a bit slow so used MSmount but T3 is very fast.

Many here have pointed out a poor battery life but I had the m5 for ages and battery didn't last long anyway so the T3 feels like a vast improvement.

I'm in UK and got a recon of ebay for ?125 it was mint.

If you have lots of accessories for the m515 they should work fine with T3 (I have GPS, Sync cables and car chargers). The T5 has a new connector so you'll have to start again. Also have read reports about OS 5.4 being a bit buggy! But others on here will be able to confirm that for you.

Iether way you won't look back moving to the T3 or T5 from the m515.

Cacus, like PalmTealLover, I too moved from an m505 to a T3. I did it the day after the T3 was released for sale in Oct 2003. I followed Palm's instructions re moving from one Palm device to another and the transition was seamless for me. I eliminated the hacks because some hack functions became features that were built into the T3 and for those that were not, I was able to find 3rd party utility applications. As I recall, 2 applications did not work under OS5 (one was my launcher), but upgrades were quickly released to remedy the problem. I'm not experienced with the GPS units, but all connectors and chargers from the m505 work with the T3.

You'll love your T3! It's a great machine with wonderful resolution, a bright screen, excellent speed, and amazing versatility. I moved from the T3 to a Treo 650 last month and I miss the T3's larger screen and I miss the stretch-screen landscape mode that is so good for spreadsheets, word processing, showing photgraphs, and watching movies in wide-screen format.
