My husbanRAB doctor is suggesting he try Manipulation under Anesthesia to help with his back problems. He has tried non drug therapy and physical therapy without any relief. He has 3 bulging discs that are keeping him out of his job as a long haul truck driver. Any suggestions?

Hello Tiger,

I am making the assumption that your husband is seeing a chiropractor for treatment. If you've reading this board in the past you probably know that there is quite a bit of prejudice against anything chiropractic. I'm afraid you won't get much supportive response to your inquiry...but, perhaps I will be proven wrong!

Unfortunately disc problems seem to go along with the job of a long distance
truck driver, as well as some other professions. Has your husband had diagnostic imaging such as a MRI or CAT scan? Most of us would not let a doctor touch us without having that as a diagnostic tool. Has he been evaluated by an ortho or neuro spinal specialist?

I know this treatment is regaining popularity after having gone through a 30 year period when it was basically not done, and no new doctors were trained in the procedure. I thought it was primarily used for breaking up scar tissue like for "frozen shoulder" or something like that. I don't quite understand how it would work with herniated discs, so I can't be of any help. I personally would be afraid to proceed with it as I would be afraid it might cause more harm than good. Sometimes when we're in pain, we don't think it could possibly get any worse, but, unfortunately, it can.

If I were your husband, I would get at least another opinion on his back before proceeding with this procedure.
