M (for mullato?) on ancestry census, what does this mean?

I did a lot of ancestry research and on censuses dating back to 1850 my ancestors had M marked for the ethnicity/race. i am basically trying to figure out if I'm native american but what does the M mean? i know it means mulatto but i also heard that back then they threw any light skin person into that mulatto category be it Asian, Hispanic, etc. so how can i tell exactly whats in me? thanks
