SounRAB like a 24 hr pH would be your next step. It isn't as common, but there is a dual probe version with probes in the throat and above the LES.

I agree with you about it being a dibilitating disease. This thing effects my breathing ALOT and gives me great anxiety. Does anyone have any nasal issues or severe post nasal drip?? I am just getting over a cold/sinus infection so maybe its that, but I am wondering because my reflux is bad again right now. I have had some food even come up my throat. Mine is usually silent. So now I am treating everything. Grrrh!

My reflux went undiagnosed for a long time because they kept attributing it to the allergies, asthma and sinus problems I have. I had silent reflux with the coughing and breathing problems primarily.

I had reflux surgery a year ago. One of the unexpected "side effects" of the surgery for me is that I've had a lot fewer sinus problems. I always attributed the sinus issues to my allergies. I had no idea how much the reflux was actually effecting my sinus and PND problems.

Have you been coughing with your upper respiratory issues? Coughing squeezes the stomach muscles and can cause the reflux to come up more than usual.

I agree with you about the anxiety. When the reflux was inflamming my lungs constantly and really affecting my breathing, I really was worried I'd have an attack that would cause me to totally stop breathing. I even needed emergency care at one point.

I tend to go to the doctor pretty frequently when I have sinus problems because I worry about it triggering my other problems. My doctors have been understanding though. When my reflux was at its worst, I went pretty frequently (even multiple times a month). I couldn't tell a difference between a bad asthma flare and the cough and breathing problems triggered by the reflux. I had the same symptoms for both. Usually they just bumped up the level of treatment for my allergies, asthma and reflux at the same time (if I wasn't already on the max) to try to get things under control together since they feed off each other.

It is really bad especially after eating..lasts for an hour or two.. some days right after getting up for hours on end, whether on a full or empty stomach.

Endoscopy was normal. On nexium 2 per day. I think I have a HERNIA because I belch alot, have bad LUMP IN THROAT and feel like something is trying to push up into my throat.

Anyone here have the same lump/breathing troubles with GERD/LPR?:confused::confused::(

P.S. ALL OTHER TESTS NORMAL,NOT ASHTMATIC,LUNGS GOOD AND CLEAR ETC...

I cough a lot, but little coughs, throat clearing. I do have PND. I broke my entire face in a motorcycle accident in 2000.

The silent reflux is bad because the heartburn is totally gone since nexium twice a day but the throat pain/burning and esp. SHORTNESS OF BREATH ALMOST CONSTANT since upping the dose though. Is it possible that the nexium could cause that?

My doc said he saw irritation and swelling in vocal corRAB and possibly oral thrush inside throat.Just finishing a 10 day anti fungal tonight, not noticing much of an improvement in the breathing.

Reflux doesn't always show up when you have the Endoscopy. The Endoscopy only shows if there is damage from the reflux. Often with LPR, the damage shows more in through throat irritation.

I had tons of trouble with breathing. My pulmonologist did a history and some testing and determined that I had reflux irritating my lungs. In my case I do have asthma so the irritation was also triggering my asthma. The lung irritation could certainly be causing your shortness of breath though.

The tests that confirmed my reflux and the severity of the reflux:
-a 24 hr pH test
-a manometry
-a Modified Barium Swallow and Esophagram

My endoscopy was clear.

For LPR, the twice per day PPI's is a good typical treatment.

Have you made diet and lifestyle modifications yet?

Even though some of your tests came back negative, it might be worth seeing a Pulmonologist regarding your breathing. They may see something the others haven't.

I have problems with breathing, too. But for me I have found that if I do not eat anything solid after about 5 pm, and only liquid nutritional supplement by 6 pm - I don't have the problems with breathing. That allows the food to pass from the stomach before I go to bed.

If the stomach is full, I have problems with breathing and am very uncomfortable.

My 24 hr ph, etc test showed that each time I belched I refluxed. So getting rid of the food early helps get rid of that problem.

I take Nexium 40 mg in am, but was on 2x/day, but have dropped back to once a day.

I have tried to follow the above as much as possible as it makes a big difference. If I don't, I end up with vocal corRAB irritated and hacking cough for couple of hours in am, not to mention the breathing problems. So far it's worked. Modifying my eating habits beats taking another pill or surgery!

can completely relate to constant lump & feeling like something is pushing up...i am going through a really bad episode where EVERYTHING is difficult to swallow and i am on two ppi's a day. I had an endoscopy that said mild gastritis and esophagitis in July.....but i am so fearful now of what it looks like, this is hellish, i've tried many meRAB and they don't seem to do a ton for me. Best of luck :)

Have you thought of going off of the Nexium ? My dr. told me today if my symptoms are gone I should stop the medication to see if the rash on my back will go away. Has anyone stopped Nexium with good results?

Bump. I have vocal cord paralysis too, one vocal cord. Does that also cause shortness of breath?

I started with having shortness of breath last January. Then I had Pulmonary function test and cardiac pft which were both negative. Then I had laryngoscopy (which was negative)and started using inhalers (never worked well). Predisone helped but its not to be taken long term. Had a Barium swallow but it showed no major reflux but I saw my barium come right up after I drank it. Had a broncoscopy, negative. Started clearing my throat a lot. Then I went to an allergist. But no trouble there. He recommended 'throat clearing exercises'. All the symptoms worsened. For the last 2 months I have been to a 2nd ent and a GI dr. who is recommending Prilosec 2x a day. I have been taking Prevacid for years but he believes Prilosec is better. My sister finally did a lot of checking and came up with LPR. I will be talking about this with my GI dr. who just did an endoscopy that was ok. Any advice? I guess I need to make some dietary and behavior changes and keep up with the Prilosec. I hope to get better because this is a mentally debilitating disease. Especially the shortness of breath.

I am finishing my 2nd week of prilosic and behavior moRAB. Had 2 good days in last 2 weeks. Only cheating is I have 1 cup of coffee in morning. From what I understand this can take weeks, months to get under control. But those weeks, months feel too long. Will update after call to GI Dr. tomorrow. Good luck to all reading and suffering.
