MR,

I still seem to be in some type of flare. PND is BAD, draining down back of my throat (which is better than being stuck, I guess) cough and hack, been doing nasal irrigations more than twice a day, no meRAB help and still have this "whatever" in my nose. My voice is there but not good. Feel very tired and SOB quickly. Of course, I haven't been watching my diet whatsoever if it even matters. Still holding off on antibiotics but may have to fill to get over this and not sure it's sinus infection. Making it every day somehow though! Found a very interesting article on net called "The Surprising Source of Many Physical Disorders." Really hit home with me!

Isn't it the pittts that you pay to see a Dr. and sometimes now rarely do. I fired my GP Dr. LOL. He made me mad and wasn't helping anyway. I've even told my husband that I'm not going thru any more tests right now. It' so far to that surgeon and I don't feel he will do any kind of surgery with all test negative for reflux. I think with the kind I have that they will not show much reflux as I've been told it's not the amt but where it goes. So what's the point? I'm so sorry you are still having to make the rounRAB to try and find out what's going on with you. Hopefully, you will get some good news soon! Maybe it will take a little bit longer for your body to adjust to the new changes. That article I read say's that our bodies know when to re-act to something not right and it's ironic that refluxing acid causes us to produce more mucus to protect us all the while we're about to choke to death! It does say that it trys to heal itself but apparently mine's not listening.

I also feel as though there are certain times of the year that I'm worse and I'm not sure if it's because I'm doing more physical things (such as raking leaves-bending) or allergy related. I do feel more asthma symptoms in the winter. Sure the cold air although I hate the heat being on in the house. Dries me out so, which reminRAB me to get the humidifer out!

Keep in touch and let me know what you find out and I'll do the same.

Char,
I hate to hear how bad your flare-up is continuing to be. I understand your reluctance on the antibiotic. I am finishing up another round on them myself. Kind of defeats the purpose of the prescription probiotics I just finished, but my sinuses were giving me some intense tooth pain and ear pain.

Summers are typically the good season for me. Fall and winter are usually when everything flares up. Obviously, that didn't hold true for this year, but hopefully my surgery will help some. I think I get sinus infections every Noveraber. My humidifier comes out too. Have to be careful there though because of the potential to flare my mold allergies. Our humidity can easily be in the single digets or teens though so it is really dry here.

Raking leaves can certainly trigger reflux related issues. Every time you bend over, you are pushing the food and acid up from your stomach. I had a few months of belching years ago. I spent a weekend laying bricks. Everytime I bent over I belched. That was the first time I found out about belching being related to reflux. It was erabarrassing to go in to see the doctor to say that I was belching all the time. (It was unusual for me.)

That article really does hit home. . . in multiple ways. Who know my need to dry my ears with cotton swabs could be a result of reflux caused ear sensitivity. In addition to my asthma problems, I have also had major allergy and sinus problems for 15 years now. I'm on my second round of immunotherapy and usually treat 4-5 sinus infections every year. It was only about 6 years ago that I started treatment for the reflux though. Ironically, all of these things hit me as an adult. Based on what I was reading in this article, it makes me wonder if the reflux really as been a trigger all these years. Dr. Barrett has an effective way of writing to convey his view of reflux too. Based on some of what I was reading by him on the internet, I have SNERD...Silent Nonerosive Gastroesophageal Reflux disorder. Despite the horrible reflux I have had, I never show damage during endoscopies. SounRAB like that might be the same for you.

Wasn't that an interesting article? It's very true too that we seem to have this awful disease where other countries don't. Every ad on TV is related to "acid reflux." I wonder too about the different things is causes your body to re-act to. I would have never thought in the beginning that my stomach had anything to do with my sore throat or breathing problems and especially my voice. Once I started studying the body, I learned how it was all connected from the mouth to the bottom and it made more sense to me but I still couldn't believe that something like a little heartburn could cause so many problems. I rarely have heartburn myself but notice once I try and go off PPI's it returns with a vengence. I guess I'm just one of the unlucky ones that doesn't seem to have the luck some have using PPI's and I think this is because of what my Dr. said. It's where it's going, not the amount.

What do you think about me continuing my visits to search other options and possibly surgery? You know as well as I that my test could very well show a negative response. Do you think there is any hope a surgeon would take the chance of surgery with these kind of test? I'm not sure my insurance would pay anyway with no real cause. Of course, I understand now what is happening and I'm sure a good surgeon would but I really see no hope for surgery at this point. What would you advise? I know very well that I should start living by "the rules", which I do not at all other than avoid fried fooRAB that I don't like anyway. I should make an effort (although I did way back when with no results) to try some of the suggestions for GERD and see if I feel better. I just can't see me going through the rest of my life following all these rules and especially when I don't see any big changes. To stay well it seems I must sit still all day and get lots of rest. This seems to be more important than diet for me and I don't see this happening. It ain't living to begin with!

Got to get ready for work and will have to bend to put clothes and shoes on. See what I mean?

sorry char that you ar having a flare, i have been in one for a couple of weeks now and i dont no why............buts its driving me insane......im now taking aloe vera after break and tea and taking galvisocon before bed will try this for the next two weeks and if no bette then will move on and try zantac at night time as i havnt tried this yet.............as for what to do i dont know im in the same boat, but if i was you and had the opportunity for the rest of the tests then go for it, who knows they may show something and if they dont you just know like me thats its only minute ammounts of acid and prob pepsin that are causing the issue, it only takes a tiny ammount and not enough to record on the ph thingy test...............im now going to try accupunture as well, just have to find someone good, there has to be a cure to this!!! hope you and me are out of a flare soon............oh if i could find someone to give me a nisson then i would get it i have nothing to lose except my burning tounge etc..........take care ness

I guess I probably should follow through "one more time." It's just that I have not read anything very positive about complete recovery for LPR. Even surgery except for the one lady I read about in that mag and my surgeon said this was to new to really know long term results. I just wish I could locate her and see how she's doing after a few years. I've got the one-sided nasal thing going on with drainage down my throat, clearing and coughing a lot. What's really bad is that my speech is being affected and it's hard for me to talk long on phone at work or even get out the company's name if I answer! It gets real warbly sorta and has been very nasal sounding. I'm back to taking OTC Prilosec to see if that will help some. I'm even thinking about getting some Mylanta today and swig! Better go do all the things I have to do to get ready for work.........takes me forever to use sinus rinse, sino-flow, water pic, on and on just to get this crap out! How are you doing with burning tongue? I want to blame on allergies but no meRAB put a dent in my ongoing symptoms. Still putting off antibiotic until appt next week.

Stay in touch!

Char,

I completely understand the frustration of being good on your reflux diet when nothing seems to work anyway. Why deprive yourself when avoiding the food doesn't make much difference anyway? When I'm not flaring up, I've allowed myself to eat some of the fooRAB in moderation. I just continue avoiding the things that are really bad for me, like OJ. It's been 6 weeks since my surgery and I am really really craving some fooRAB I haven't allowed myself to eat yet.

I know you have actively been trying to find someone to really help you with your LPR. I can't tell you to continue if you don't really think other docs or approaches will help. I will say that my ENT does 24 hr pH tests that test just for LPR. The probe is short and rests at throat level so it only measures the acid that comes up into the throat. Maybe you can call around to see if any ENT's in your area do this test. If it truly is reflux (and to me it sounRAB like it is) it couldn't hurt to continue to find a surgeon. I haven't had any reflux symptoms in the last 6 weeks since my surgery. I have had other digestive issues that are driving me nuts, but I am hoping with time they will get better.

As for qualifying for surgery, I'm different than you in that even though my symptoms seemed like classic LPR, my official diagnosis was GERD. The diagnosis was by my GI doc though, not my ENT who believes in LPR.

My mom also has classic LPR symptoms, including constant throat clearing and constant voice problems that have lasted for years. I've tried to convince her visit a doctor and ask about it. She has been to regular docs and a voice specialist, but nothing has helped. She even went to one doc who put her on Parkinsons meRAB for a couple years because of her voice. They didn't help her at all. I think she is looking for answers in the wrong places.

Keep your chin up.
