I am having quite a time with my back.

It started about 5 years ago while I was walking at the local gym. I would notice a nurabing sensation run down my leg and at times my leg would almost give out.

It has gone from annoying to almost unbearable in that time, the only way I get relief is to lie down on my right side in bed.

The doctor did xrays and told me I had degenerative disc disease and prescribed oxycodone for the pain.

It has gotten so bad that I lay awake most nights in agony.

Has anyone got any ideas?

I think you need either a CT scan or MRI of your back because regular x-rays cannot give the detailed information that is needed to diagnosis the problem. I speak from experience because when I began having problems with my cervical spine my GP did x-rays only and it did show the degenerative but when they did the MRI it showed the bone spurs and stenosis.

You really need to talk to your doctor again and tell him how bad it is because it just adRAB to everything else when you don't get a good nights sleep. I hope you can get some help soon because I do understand how painful back pain is and just taking pain medication doesn't solve the problem.

I agree that you need further medical evaluation including and MRI and then a consultation with an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and/or Neurosurgeon. Once you have symptoms that don't go away a GP can't really continue to treat you - it's time to head for the specialist.
