I have had some pretty bad lower back pain for a while now. But the thing is it switches sides from time to time. Like right now sitting it is killing my left side down into my leg. Can someone give me some insight into what might be going on. I have never had any back problems before.

Hi, Navarrdv . . . I have sciatica that started occurring after a fall on my tail bone 20 some years ago. It has had a few bad times up until the last few years as it seems with the coming of older age, it does not take much for the sciatica to act up.

Mine wraps around to my hip and often down my leg causing charlie horses.

When it is really bad, my feet will seem to lose control when I am walking.

Sciatica is basically a pinched nerve in your lower back. While for many years I only felt it on the right side, I now occasionally feel it on the left as well. It is aggravated by heavy lifting, repetitive motion, bouncing in a moving vehicle, sitting in one position too long or even laying in a wrong position while sleeping at night.

X-ray findings after my accident did not prove or disprove that I had it but physical examination and having me move certain ways did.

Ask your doctor if it could be sciatica.

Keep us posted!

thanks. Like right now it is mostly left side, but a little on right side and middle too. Last night I put an ice pack on my lower back and sat with a pillow on my lower back and it seemed to help, but it was really bad last nite to the point I had trouble standing up.

I would advise if you could, to spend more time with your legs elevated. It really seems to help and the pillow behind the back depending if where your knees bend hits the edge of the sofa or chair you are sitting on, so that your knees when you sit up are away from the edge.

Yes, the getting up is difficult. I usually have to steady myself with one hand and then "get my bearings" before I move. Sitting down is sometimes hard, too. I usually end up doing what my husband affectionately calls "the atomic butt drop". ;)
