Okay, so track season has come around and I have just started to run the 100m hurdles for the first time for my school. I have been in basketball and volleyball, so I guess my body is not quite used to all the running. Today, during athletics, we ran a mile and the did 3 sets of 100m hurdles for timing. Now, the right side of my lower back is killing me! The pain is coming from down near my tailbone. It hurts to put pressure on it, like when walking and running. What could be the cause and how can I fix it before thursday?

Most likely the problem is some pulled muscles as you mentioned you have never done this before. Try using ice for 20 minutes several times per day, and gently stretch the muscles. Also, if you don't have medical problems that prevent you from using it, Ibuprofin works great for pain relief and as an anti-inflammatory to help ease the pain and swelling.

If you are still having problems in a week, a trip to you doctor might be necessary. The area you are talking about could potentially indicate a problem with your sacroiliac joint.

Best wishes!
