Slumdog Millionaire
District 9
Taken (2009)
High School Musical 1
Just some examples of the past few months sucess stories. Taken maybe not so huge here but it was in the top 10 in the states for a few months. District 9, fairly low budget and the CGI was good as the high end hollywood blockbusters. Slumdog was also quite low budget yet possibly one of the biggest films of the last year. HSM was just meant to be a run of the mill Disney film for the D.Channel yet it became one of the biggest kiRAB movie ever, didn't exactly have a $100m budget did it?
Now while i agree the large movies do fairly well, it seems over the past year or 2 that lower budget films are doing quite well. People i think arn't being to impressed with all these huge films. Batman obviously has been a huge movie however would it of been as big it has without the great Heath Ledgers death?
The question is, is low budget films the future?. Some people may just straight away say no but having a smaller budget allows directors to use every penny of their money to make the film good as they can. If they get given $150m im sure they arn't as good with the money (Superman returns anyone?)
Sci-fi is also i think quite popular with people but obviously they need a bit more money to make. Star Trek 2009 had alot of hype along with previous movies (even Nemesis :\), star wars, Men in Black, Doctor Who (not a movie yet i know and not really 100% scifi), StarGate have always been popular with the public. Yet their isn't huge amounts of these sorts of action movies set in space.
Movies now seem to just be getting same old same old really. The reason the movies listed at the top have done so well is because their different to any other movies that have been out. What are your oppinions on this?
