Today I was driving my vehicle and it has had zero mechanical/engine problems prior to today. I drove about 5 miles, took an exit onto a bridge. There was a slight bump in the pavement then suddenly there was a loud noise from the motor. I drove to my destination (about 2 miles). Now the noise is constant when the motor is running, it becomes louder with acceleration and has a loss of power. The "Service Engine Soon" light is also on.
A friend seems to think it could have a "rod knocking" in the engine, but he's not a mechanic and has limited experience working on cars. Does this diagnosis seem possible? As I said, this happened instantly, there's not even been a slight miss or noise with the car until today.
