Lou Reed, famed singer, songwriter and guitarist of popular 1960s New York City band The Velvet Underground, died on Sunday - the
Rolling Stone's Jon Dolan reports.
He was 71 years old.

The Brooklyn-born artist and musician became a fixture of the Rock 'n' Roll era with his band, garnering notoriety with a cult following despite modest record sales.
The Velvet Underground, known for songs like "Sunday Morning," and "Sweet Jane," were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996.

Reed and the band’s collaborative work with artist Andy Warhol is known as one of the most celebrated partnerings in contemporary pop culture.
He remained active in his solo career, and interactive with his fans until the last day. His Twitter account, with over 42,000 followers, was frequently updated. Reed's last tweet was posted Sunday morning.

The cause of Reed's death has not yet been revealed, but according to the Rolling Stone, the iconic songwriter underwent a liver transplant in May.
