loss of vision and dizziness

hi, for a few years ive been having this happen to me occasionally, once every 3-4 months or so but this year its become much more frequent, its happening almost every other day, its usually when i stand up but sometimes its random.

I can be walking down the street with friends and i will lose my vision, everything will go dark instantly and i will become very dizzy, i am able to hear things but it will sound muffled and far off, my vision and hearing will slowly return over around 20-30 seconds starting from the middle, its like a fog is dissapearing, its extremely unnerving and frightening as i have to stop still so i dont fall over, which i have done in the past and knocked things over. This is sometimes accompanied with hot flushes and shortness of breath.

I have not gone to see a doctor about this yet, i am going sometime this week but i was wondering if anyone has heard of this before, or even experiences the same things, if so i would very much like to hear your experiences and how you deal with it and what it could be.

thank you
arca

Yes, I have had this happen. It almost feels like your body is going into a power outage.

I have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar condition) and that part causes the hot flashes, panic and shortness of breath. Sometimes when your blood sugar is low, your blood pressure can be low as well. This will cause the disturbance in vision and hearing, as well as the feeling like you might pass out.

Ways to avoid this from happening is to eat a good meal before going out to do things and take some type of beverage with you that has caloric and carbohydrate content with you (such as sports drinks, fruit juice, milk).

Intense emotions about something (like you get in a really animated chat with your friends about something you feel strongly about) can burn up blood sugar quickly because it causes you to release adrenaline and that can use up your blood sugar.

If trying these things does not work, it could be something more serious you need to get checked by a doctor.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

cheers for your feedback, i am getting it checked out as it doesnt seem that good hehe.

ie already had 2 blood tests in the past year, one was a montha ago but they came back fine, they might not have been checking for sugar tho as they were to look for fat in my blood and to check for heart desiese, (which im clear of). does anyone know if the doctors would have been able to spot low blood sugar with this?
also my blood pressure is fine, and im slightly underweight

cheers

They have to check specifically for blood sugar even if they are checking for other things.

If they get a reading they think is too low or too high, they will check subsequent times and make comparisons. If you only need to have your sugar checked, it will be a finger stick blood test rather than out of the arm.

Let us know how it goes!

Lindaru :)
