Lortabs - Am I an "addict"?

Hi everyone

First, a little about myself. I am a 46 year old male, ex-smoker/alcoholic who has not smoked/drank in over a year. I have been plagued with anxiety/OCD/Tourettes/Agoraphobia over the years and from day to day I usually don't feel all that well as a rule. I am on Ativan (25mg) and Prevacid (30mg).

Anyway, it all started with a half of a Lortab (APAP 7.5mg/500mg) each day for severe muscle/joint pain which I believe was caused by Fibromyalgia and soon developed into what I believe is now an addiction (?). I went from taking 2/3 of a tablet to 1/2 a tablet and for the past month have managed to taper down to 1/4 tablet each day. The reason I have been tapering down is not because I am trying to quit (although I'd definitely like to) but because I seem to feel less and less well/healthy with each dose and am no longer able to tolerate it as much as I used to be able to.

When I am coming down off of it (the next morning) I usually wake up feeling ok but as the day goes on, I end up feeling very "toxic" as if poison was flowing through my veins. I also tend to get very mild intermittent pain in the liver area and my bowels feel somewhat inflamed and uncomfortable. My brain also feels very loopy, hungover and surreal and this feeling is worse when I'm coming down off of it then when I am taking it. Also, my lungs seem to be affected to some extent. Either way, whether I take it or not, I still don't feel well so it's like a no-win situation for me.

I guess my question is whether these side effects/withdrawal symptoms are normal and if I am truly what you'd call an addict (I only take 1/4 of a tablet per day) and I can't understand how only 1/4 of a tablet would cause me to feel this way when there are people out there who take 10 tablets a day and seem to be ok. Also, any tips on getting off of this stuff or coping with the side effects/withdrawal symptoms?.

Thanks so much for any help I can get in understanding this!.

Hi Steve and welcome....sorry to hear about your problems. I am a former heroin/methadone addict and currently dependent on oxycodone for back pain, so I've had a lot of experience with opiate withdrawal symptoms. And what you are describing doesn't sound anything like WD. Some of the classic symptoms are clamminess/skin crawling, hot/cold flashes, chills, sweating, yawning, jumpiness, eyes watering, and other lovely things. These symptoms then disappear when the opiate is taken and starts working.

You are on a really low dose of Lortab, but I do recall having mild WD symptoms even when I was only taking one Percocet a day. But as I said above, what you're describing doesn't sound like WD....of course, I'm not a doctor. I hope that you can find help for your problems.

i am not an md either it sounRAB like mabey it is the corabo of your meRAB , i can identify with the stomach pain, mabey talk to doctor about a liver test hope the best for you, keep us updated :wave:scott

No I don't see you as an 'addict' but only you know if you need the drug or not. Always take what you need for pain and always be honest about that. If you need something for pain then 'addict' should never be a word that enters into the picture ...all your diagnosis suggests you will always need something for pain. Now.... for the drugs you are taking...if you are truly on 25mg of Ativan you are in trouble...or did you mean 2.5mg? 2.5mg is an appropriate low dose but 25mg is a daily overdose. And Prevacid can cause all kinRAB of side effects for some people and perhaps you are experiencing some side effects? If you think your liver or whatever are involved then have your doctor do some blood work on your liver to be sure it is processing things ok. You are on low doses of everything and I suspect you are experiencing some continued recovery time from your alcoholic condition. I would hope you have a sponsor that can help you with all those feeling that go along with recovery. Your whole body has to now learn how to funtion without alcohol and I am guessing that is why you are on Ativan and Prevacid for your stomach. Perhaps your liver was affected as you didn't say how bad your alcoholism was but if you were in a recovery program they would tell you that loritab and the ativan are drugs that you should not be on ...a drug is a drug is a drug. But life deals us all kinRAB of blows and as we age things happen so be sure you continue with your AA meetings as long as you need pain pills. Just take one day at a time and in a year from now you should be feeling better. Your brain and organs will have had time to 'settle down'. Good luck. If you did not go through a formal recovery program then read up on nutrition and what you need to do to heal your body. Good luck.
