Does anyone know which high defenition format the trilogy will be released on after the announcement of Warner going with BluRay - if this will make any difference (not sure who NewLine is with?).
Also is there any release dates?
Had a quick look around and only found old posts.

This is one film i have to get on HD!

I'm pretty sure that Warner own New Line so i'm guessing that LOTR will eventually come out on Blu Ray. No idea when though, maybe christmas time? I cant wait either, some of the scenes should look stunning.

500th post - awesome!

No plans yet. George Lucas has stated that no Star Wars films will be released in high-def until there is single a clear winner in the format war. Will be a while yet.

Lord of the Rings would be great and yes I figure Blu-Ray as New Line have commited to Blu-Ray following their parent company Warner Bros.

George Lucas is the master of milking formats for every penny. I remember when The phantom Menace came out and he denied point blank that he was going to release it on DVD. When it released on VHS everybody including me bought it and then a few months down the line he said "Oh I think I'll release it on DVD after all" so off we all went again. As you say I would expect a while before we see an HD version and pobably at least one more DVD version release. A super special edition with every version available in one set or something along those lines.

Yeah. I'd expect a HD version next year, probably with the much talked about re-work of TPM with CGI Yoda (as seen briefly on the ROTS DVD extras).

More likey this year is the digital 3D versions of the films.

Yeah they're biding their time, working on the FINAL FINAL ULTIMATE editions of all 6 films before releasing them presumably on Blu-ray. If Lucas has any sense he'll also include in this set HD masters of all the films as they were ORIGINALLY. Everyone will be happy then.

If I were to guess at a release date of this ultimate everything-but-the-kitchen-sink set it would be autumn 2009 to coincide with the premier of the new Star Wars TV series.

I read a few years ago that they are working on the HD masters of Star Wars, but they are having to go through frame by frame cleaning up things that in HD look terrible. I read that there is a scene where you can see a bin propping a door open clearly in HD... If its true or not I don't know... but thats why it might be taking some time.

Of course they could just be holding off till someone wins the HD war, and till the live action TV series is due to air.

I will wait patiently for the Extended Versions - Peter Jackson has said himself that they are the definitive versions of the films and I can only agree.

I felt cheated after watching the Extended Versions for the first time, not with those versions themselves, but that the Theatrical Versions do not even come close to the sheer brilliance of them.

Well I don't actually own a BluRay player as it is, but when the extended versions come out i'll get one.

It's a really cynical money making move by warner, but then I guess i'm not really surprised.

I already have the extended version on DVD. I might upgrade that version to bluray. But I won't hold my breath for it being released, it must be too precious for us to have!
