Loosing your old phone and replacing with one a friend gave you...cost?

Hi, would i be able to transfer that phone to my cell phone plan, without having to pay a lot?
I heard it was only $10 to transfer since i have another phone already, or would it cost me more? Do I have to go down with my parents because they pay for the phone?
