I saw my neurosurgeon on the 24th, and looking at my MRI's, he has suggested surgery. It looks like I have 4 herniated discs (L2-3, L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1), with severe canal stenosis at levels L2, L4. Moderate canal stenosis at L3 and L5 with severe lateral recess stenosis at the L5 - S1 area. I still have a grade 1 spondy at L5-S1, with built up scar tissue from my previous micro D. Osteophyte complex is also moderately severe.

The Dr. and I have agreed upon a decompressive laminectomy from level L2 - S1 with use of the Dynesys flexible fusion at L5-S1, which may also have to be used at the other levels as well. He says he'll determine that after he removes the bone and checks the stability of my spine. I am concerned about my pain level lately. Me left leg is acting like my sciatic nerve at L5-S1 is being knarled again. I know I can't have another micro D there, and my concern is if when he gets in there and thinks the disc neeRAB to be replaced, I'll be unconcious. My wife is my proxy, and I have told her if it comes to it, I don't want the Maverick or Charite discs. I only want the Prodisc. Should I call the Dr. and talk to him about this before my operation? It is scheduled for this Friday at 10 AM. Let me know what y'all think.......

Yes, I would call and speak with your doctor, remerabering that they don't like to be told what to do!!

Also, have you gotten more than one opinion regarding your situation and this surgery? Disc replacement is still very controversial, as is the Dynesys procedure. Regardless of that point, it is always a good idea to get more than one opinion when entering into major surgery that can be life-changing.

Well, I had the operation on 9-10, and so far things are going great. I had the decompressive lami's from L2 - S1 and he did a flexible fusion using peek roRAB and screws at L5 - S1 to correct my grade 1 spondy. My leg pain is almost completely GONE!!!! Some movements aggrivate the legs, but not nearly to the pain level it once was. I am beginning to get back sensation in my right leg that I didn't have for the last 5 years. Sure, my back hurts like crazy laying in bed in the morning, but when I get up it really lightens up.

I am still wearing the brace, and will have to for at least the next month. Dr also says I'll be significantly restricted in most areas for the next 4 - 6 months. All in all, I am very happy and satisfied with how thinks went and continue to go in my recovery process. With all the bad outcomes out there, I thought it'd be great to share a positive story with everyone......
