I am searching for the title and author of a short story I read around 18 years ago. The story is at least that old, probably older. It is a science fiction story. The only major details I remember about the plot are that it was about a man who had invented a serum that would make him immortal. He then took this serum, and it worked. Then for some reason his wife or friend beheaded him. There is then a detailed description of the still alive head trying to clime a set of stars. That's all I remember.
I read this in a pamphlet or reader with other science fiction stories. One I have identified as “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury.
