I would like to install a decent sound system for a relatively low price... i don't need top of the line but something that will work without sounding like crap. I really don't know much about car audio, so any advice/info would also be helpful

Hi mate,

It all depends on the car you have, and how capable you are with the tools.

One of the first things to do is upgrade the head unit, go for something like a Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer < Alpine and Kenwood are the best!.

To note: you want to stay away from Sony, Ripspeed and other makes.

As for a good headunit like Alpine, Kenwood, you want to go for one with 50w and atleast 1 preout, should be able to get one for £100.00 or on ebay for around £50.00.

But note, the more you pay the better it will be but then it is only as good as your weakest link!

After that your talking about upgrading speakers, it all depends on your price but again companies that are well known like alpine and kenwood are the best. You could even add tweeters in the front by spliting the front two channels.

After all that, you will have atleast one pre-out so you could think about adding a sub and amp. This can be done for around for around £100.00 and is a great addition to I.C.E. (In car entertainment). Again the more you spend the better quality! And go for good makes such as alpine, kenwood, mutant!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anything after that is just upgrading more on what you have, and ends up cost hundreds or even thousands!

-Important things to remember,
-Good makes = Quality
- Ebay is great for cheap goods
- More power = less distortion
- Well placed speakers = great staging

And remeber, it's not about how loud your system goes, it's about the quality of the sound!

Hope i helped!

check out crutchfield.com that way you can get an idea of what you want and they have a section on learning about car audio, some good info......Mutant wtf never heard of them. I agree on Kenwood though.
