Looking for ways to organize my huge collection of digital photos.?

In addition to all of my digital pictures, I have been scanning in hundreds more of my paper photos from my film camera days.

So far I have my pics grouped in folders by subject or location. For the pictures of multiple people, I have them in a "misc" folder and all pix are numbered.

I guess I am just looking for ideas I may not have thought of that will allow me to do a search and find the pic I am, looking for. I know this will require me to rename most of the numbered pix to actual titles rather than just numbers.

It seems there must be a better way than to name a group pic something like "John-Jenny-Tom-James-Tony-Mike.jpg" especially when there are LOTS of such group pix from various time periods.

Is there a way to maybe put the names of all the subjects in the comments section of the pic and have descriptive words in the comments (tag) be searchable?

For example have a pic titled "001.jpg" with all the names plus maybe a brief description in the comments under properties. If the word Seaworld (for example) is in the comments, can I do a search for "seaworld" and find that pic even though it is titled "001.jpg"?

Anyways hopefully someone understands my question in this gibberish ;)

Thanks

Run, don't walk to get yourself a copy of Peter Krough's "That DAM book" its the bible of digital asset management. I read it while waiting to find out if I would be retained for jury duty (a single day) and I am super organized now.
